Autumn has arrived, and change is in the air. By the time Lift & Co.’s next Cannabis Jobs in Canada report is written, cannabis will be legal. In the meantime, with retailers and producers eager to be ready on day one, new listings for jobs in the cannabis sector continue at peak levels.
Corporate and tech roles
A steady level of corporate roles continue to be available at all levels.
In the “dream job” category, AHLOT is seeking an expert-level connoisseur for one of five seats on their Cannabis Curation Committee. This job description effectively boils down to professional weed smoker, with the handsome wage of $50 per hour, plus a weed allowance. Read that last sentence again for emphasis.
Intermediate roles are available throughout Ontario. In Toronto, a cannabis industry recruiter is being sought by CCS Green, and a mergers and acquisitions associate is needed at Tilray, while in Kitchener, an executive assistant to the CEO is needed at James E. Wagner Cultivation.
Also in Toronto, Lift & Co. is accepting applications for a senior software developer.
In other senior roles, a regional business manager is being sought by Tilray in Calgary, Alta., a senior finance manager is needed at AgMedica Bioscience in London, Ont., and a government relations manager is being sought by Aurora in Halifax.
Farming and production
Entry-level roles are booming this month, especially for packagers.
CannTrust is seeking more than 100 general packaging labourers for weekend shifts at their facility in Vaughan, Ont. More packaging associates are needed by producers throughout Ontario, including Peace Naturals in Stayner, Tilray in London, and Aphria in Leamington. Another opening for a packager is available at Aurora Cannabis in Pointe-Claire, Que.
Trimmers are needed at Bloom Cultivation in Calgary, Alta., at Quality Green in Hamilton, Ont., and at Canopy Growth in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont., while a harvester is needed at Delta 9 Bio-Tech in Winnipeg, Man.
Junior grower roles are available throughout Ontario. Peace Naturals in Stayner is seeking a plant care team member, Quality Green in Canfield is hiring for an assistant grower, and a cultivation technician position is open at Ringsby Services in Brampton.
Intermediate grower roles are also to be found. A cloning technician is needed at Sundial Growers in Olds, Alta., an irrigation coordinator is needed in Markham, Ont., and a cannabis grower is needed in Toronto.
Senior grower roles continue to be in high demand, with a master grower needed on the Sunshine Coast in B.C., a lead grower being sought by Auxly Cannabis Group in Toronto, and a chief horticulturist needed in Edmonton, Alta.
For those who might be horticulturally challenged but still keen to work in production, more general labourers are being hired at Quality Green in Canfield, Ont., for swamping, cleaning, and assembly of furniture and equipment. Meanwhile a licensed producer in Grimsby, Ont., is seeking 20+ general labourers to help with greenhouse renovations.
Sales and distribution
Retail job listings dwarfed every other category this month, in both entry-level and management roles.
Sales associates and customer service reps are needed in Edmonton and Winnipeg, in North Battleford, Sask., at the Société Québécoise du Cannabis in Montréal, Que., and in Calgary at Aylmer Nelson Cannabisand Cannabis Cowboy.
Temporary positions are available across western Canada, as retailers brace for the initial surge of customers eager to enjoy their new rights and privileges. Postings have been listed for all cities in B.C., all cities in Alberta, all cities in Saskatchewan, and all cities in Manitoba.
For those who prefer not to work directly with the public, an opening for telephone customer service rep is available in the Greater Toronto Area, and shippers/receivers are needed at CanniMed in Saskatoon, Sask., and at CannTrust in Vaughan, Ont. A warehouse worker is being sought for the BC Liquor Distribution Branch in Richmond, B.C.
Intermediate and senior retail roles are also not in short supply.
NewLeaf Cannabis is seeking a retail team leader in St. Albert, Alta., The Green Organic Dutchman is looking for a customer service director in Hamilton, Ont., and Lift & Co. is hiring a customer service team lead in Toronto.
Clinical services, research, and laboratory roles
Quality assurance positions are available in Osoyoos, B.C. and in Toronto, as well as at Sweetgrass in Edmonton, at Cannabis Compliance Inc. in Mississauga, and at Canopy Growth Corp. in St. John’s, Nfld.
In senior roles, a quality assurance manager is needed at 314 Pure Cannabis in Crossfield, Alta., a head chemist is being sought by Innovative Phytoceuticals in Kelowna, B.C., and Durham College in Oshawa, Ont., seeks a cannabis program development manager.
